We are thrilled to have Dillon de Medeiros as Werge & Corbin LLC’s Summer Associate! Dillon began with our firm at the beginning of the year as a part time spring law clerk, while finishing up his second year of law school. He will be entering his third and final year of Law School at Colorado University this Fall. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics and worked for several years at LSP Technologies, Inc. before making the switch to the legal world. As our summer law clerk, Dillon works alongside our amazing attorneys and team members developing instrumental skills to further his future career as an attorney. The assignments frequently involve diverse legal research and writing, which we believe are essential in the improvement of law students’ legal skills and overall confidence. Whether it is participating in one of our hosted networking events or a scheduled happy hour, we encourage our law clerks to get connected in the local community. Our hope is that Dillon gains critical knowledge and mentorship during his time working with our firm.

We look forward to what the remainder of the summer brings to Dillon and our team. We are assured that his passion for law and his dedication will make a significant impression on our firm and his own future endeavors. Welcome, Dillon!

Werge Law Group Supports the Bar by Thomas Werge

The attorneys at Werge Law Group have consistently looked for ways to support the bar associations and improve the practice of law. Even our newest associates are becoming leaders of the bar. Kelsey Martin has recently been appointed to the Colorado Women's Bar Association's (CWBA) Board of Directors as the representative for the Colorado LGBT Bar Association. Kelsey has a dual position with the LGBT Bar, serving as the Social Media Chair and Mentorship Chair. In these positions, her goal for 2023 is to launch a professional mentorship program through the LGBT Bar to serve CU and DU OUTLaw students by matching them with members of the LGBT Bar. The program will be live this upcoming Fall 2023 for OUTLaw students. Keep an eye out for ways to participate. In addition to the mentorship program, Kelsey helps facilitate events for the OUTLaws students throughout the year. For updates regarding the upcoming schedule, follow the LGBT Bar on LinkedIn here or join as a member at (https://coloradolgbtbar.org/).

Austin Baxter was recently sworn in as an attorney and is a member of several bar associations. He is a member the LGBT Bar Association, the Hispanic bar association, the Boulder Bar Association, and the Colorado Bar Association (CBA), including the Cannabis Law Section and the Sports and Entertainment Section. He also plans to participate in the Young Lawyers Division.

Greg Corbin is Chair-Elect for the Solo Small Firm Section of the Colorado Bar Association, where he previously served as Secretary. The SSF Section organizes Continuing Legal Education (CLE) events, networking opportunities, and a community forum to facilitate support and advice among fellow attorneys practicing alone or in a small firm. It serves as a valuable resource for solo practitioners, enabling them to establish connections that might otherwise be challenging to attain. Greg has already held multiple events and happy hours for the Solo Small Firm Association to bring together attorneys and foster a positive community. He has also served as a CLE presenter for the Solo/Small Firm Institute presented by the Solo Small Firm Section, helping attorneys elevate their practice.

Tom Werge was recently appointed to two new positions: (1) as the Denver Bar Association representative to the CBA’s governing body, the Board of Governors, and (2) as an at-large representative to the CBA Litigation Section Executive Council. He also continues his work with the Solo Small Firm Section, primarily through its Judicial Nominations Committee. Tom relishes his involvement with the CBA and DBA, and strives to assist our diverse legal community in improving our system of justice and the practice of law.

Happy Juneteenth! by Thomas Werge

Our office will be closed on Monday, June 19th, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day is the newest federal holiday, which is also currently a state holiday in 28 states, including Colorado. The holiday celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth symbolizes the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of all enslaved people. It serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we have made as a nation and the ongoing work needed to promote equality and justice.

Werge Law Group celebrates and recognizes each of holiday that the State of Colorado observes, plus the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. By providing more paid holidays, we aim to actively support all of our attorneys and staff in achieving a balance of their personal and work lives. We are also signatories to the Colorado Pledge to Lawyer Well-Being, through which we have pledged to “provide access to or seek to develop meaningful ‘work-life integration’ through flexible work schedules and policies that respect lawyers’ desire for autonomy and some measure of control over professional and personal lives.” We believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for our employees to thrive both personally and professionally. Happy Juneteenth!

Austin Baxter is officially an Attorney by Thomas Werge

We are delighted to announce that on April 27th, Austin Baxter received the news that he had passed the bar exam. He was sworn in on May 25, 2023, marking the official beginning in his career as an attorney – three weeks before he turns 25 years old.

This feat is a decade-long journey for Austin, as he set his sights on a career as an attorney after being selected to represent California at the National Judicial Competition during his first year of high school. Austin competed in mock trial and moot court on a national level throughout high school, being awarded a top appellate justice award and leading a mock trial team to a 6th place finish. In his senior year, Austin served as California Youth and Government’s 68th Chief Justice.

Austin began at Werge & Corbin LLC as a summer law clerk after his second year of law school and continued to work with us through his final semester of law school. He took a brief hiatus while studying for the February 2023 Colorado Bar exam and has since been back at the firm helping our clients.

Just under ten years after Austin first competed in mock trial, Austin has been sworn in as an attorney ready to represent our clients. We are thrilled for Austin and commend him for his hard work in achieving this remarkable accomplishment. As Austin steps into his new role as an attorney, we are confident that he will continue to excel at Werge & Corbin LLC. The entire firm is proud of his achievements and is excited to witness his growth and success as a lawyer.

Congratulations, Austin!

Werge & Corbin in the News! by Thomas Werge

Law Week Colorado features partners Tom Werge and Greg Corbin in two separate articles yesterday. Tom Werge, recognized for his contribution and statement regarding the overly oppositional change in behaviors in the business litigation world, “I think this is an ongoing issue due to the lack of in person connection within the practice, including during covid, and post-covid,” Tom states. “I am hopeful, with the return of more in-person events and hearings, that we can stem the degradation of civility within the practice,” mentions Tom. And Greg Corbin, recognized and named for a Super Lawyers Rising Star for the third consecutive year, shares his insight for new attorneys. Greg recommends for new attorneys beginning their career to form as many connections as possible with mentors and colleagues while also remaining devoted to your craft. “Embrace learning opportunities, even if they at first feel like losses. Remember, building a successful legal career takes time, so be patient with yourself and stay focused on your long-term goals,” Greg states. Read more on Colorado ‘Rising Stars’ Offer Insights for New Lawyers here.

Pro Bono Pledge by Thomas Werge

The Colorado Supreme Court acknowledges law firms and attorneys that commit to and achieve a goal of providing at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services per year, per attorney. The pro bono pledge is intended to increase access to justice and provide legal services without payment of fees to individuals and organizations of limited means. Rule 6.1 of the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct sets forth an aspirational goal that each lawyer render at least 50 hours of pro bono public legal services per year, with a substantial majority of those hours without fee to (1) persons of limited means or (2) governmental or non-profit organization matters designed primarily to address the needs of persons of limited means.

On April 26, 2023, the Supreme Court held its annual recognition ceremony for all law firms participating in the pledge. And we are pleased to announce Werge & Corbin LLC (Werge Law Group) was recognized as one of the firms that not only took the pledge, but surpassed the goal, completing almost 200 hours of pro bono work amongst attorneys Kelsey Martin, Thomas Werge, and Greg Corbin! We are proud of what this accomplishment represents – our continued dedication to helping underserved individuals and small businesses in Colorado.
